Ava DeSantis ’19 – Leading Others to Awareness

Ava DeSantis ’19 of Delmar has long been interested in advocacy.  On Saturday, April 21, Ava successfully organized a 5K run for the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy.

Ava had previously raised funds for the local environmental non-profit, but decided to take on a leadership role in coordinating an event for Earth Day.  An enthusiastic group of runners and walkers took to the Albany County Helderberg-Hudson Rail Trail for the event.

In a recent interview with the Altamont Enterprise, Ava cites several of her Doane Stuart history teachers for their inspirational classes which helped raise her awareness of global issues. Her experience as captain of Doane Stuart’s Mock Trial Team and participation in a Human Rights Symposium have also impelled Ava to act as a champion for causes in which she believes.

Ava recruited members of the School community for the run. Pictured are speedy alumnus Nick Buttino ’05, Director of College Counseling Kathleen Bracken, Ava, and Morgan Hanaway ’19.  Nick and Ms. Bracken ran the event, while Morgan volunteered to assist Ava with logistics.

Congratulations, Ava!
