Middle School
A Balance of Freedom and Direction
Middle School at Doane Stuart (Grades 5–8) is a time of discovery, growth, and increasing independence. These are transformative years—and we meet students where they are, helping them build confidence, character, and a strong academic foundation.
As a leading private middle school in the Capital Region, we combine a traditional, rigorous curriculum with personalized learning and meaningful experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Our students begin to understand that their voice matters—and that they play an active role in shaping their education and their future.
Academics Rooted in Exploration and Purpose
Our Middle School students in Grades 5–8 engage in a dynamic, challenging curriculum that includes:
- Literature and Writing across the curriculum
- History and Social Studies
- Mathematics & Algebra
- French, Japanese, or Spanish
- Science in the Lab, Outdoors, and on Field Trips
We emphasize writing in every subject and foster critical thinking, collaboration, and curiosity. Students explore complex questions, analyze real-world issues, and build the foundational skills to thrive in Upper School and beyond.

Signature Pennant Programs: Real-World Learning
To further enhance the student experience, Doane Stuart offers signature Pennant Programs—innovative, experiential learning opportunities unique to our private middle school in Albany. These programs connect academic learning to real-world applications, preparing students for future success both in Upper School and in life.
The OWL Program (Outdoor Wilderness Learning)
Integrated into the Middle School Physical Education curriculum, the OWL Program connects students to nature through adventure-based learning:
- Grades 5–6 focus on environmental exploration—tree and bird identification, foraging, and group-based nature projects.
- Grades 7–8 gain wilderness skills through hiking, navigation, and outdoor survival training, culminating in a fall hiking trip and a spring weekend camping experience.
These outdoor modules challenge students to build resilience, teamwork, and confidence—all while developing a deeper appreciation for the natural world around Albany and the greater Capital Region.
Beyond the Classroom: Activities, Arts, and Leadership
Our students are active, curious, and encouraged to explore their interests beyond academics. Middle School life includes:
- Athletics and team sports
- Creative expression through visual art, music, chorus, and band
- Digital literacy and technology education
- Frequent outings and educational field trips around Albany and the Capital District
