Expanding Horizons Through Immersive, Real-World Learning Experiences

At Doane Stuart, education is more than academics—it’s about discovery, connection, and purpose. Our students don’t just study the world; they experience it through immersive, real-world opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

From project-based learning in the Upper School to urban exploration in New York City and international cultural immersion over spring break, our experiential learning programs are designed to challenge students intellectually and personally—preparing them for thoughtful, engaged lives in a global society.

Ignite. Innovate. Inspire. (I³ Program)
A Signature Doane Stuart Experience

Our I³ program offers Upper School students an unparalleled opportunity to explore interdisciplinary, hands-on courses that tackle real-world issues through the lens of science, humanities, social impact, and the arts.

Students might investigate topics such as:

  • Food justice and sustainable agriculture
  • Public health and community wellness
  • Climate systems and environmental advocacy
  • The role of art in social and political change

Built on the Design Thinking model, I³ courses emphasize collaboration, curiosity, and critical thinking. Students engage in creative problem-solving, shape their own projects, and develop solutions with both academic rigor and real-world relevance.

Urban Studies in Action: The New York City Gentrification Project
Grade 11 Experiential Week

As part of our commitment to applied learning, all 11th grade students participate in an immersive week-long academic exploration of urban development in New York City. This unique experience challenges students to examine the complexities of gentrification through field research, dialogue, and design.

Key Highlights:

  • Explore diverse NYC neighborhoods and study their history and development
  • Engage with civic leaders, grassroots activists, and community residents
  • Analyze multiple perspectives—historical, economic, cultural, and political
  • Design potential solutions or interventions that are respectful, inclusive, and informed
  • Participate in both serious inquiry and shared moments of joy and recreation

This course is strictly academic and intentionally nonpartisan, encouraging students to form their own critical perspectives by engaging with real people and real challenges on all sides of the urban development conversation.

Global Experiences: International Travel
Spring Break Journeys for Upper School Students

Each spring, Doane Stuart students have the opportunity to travel abroad on faculty-led international trips that connect cultural experience with academic inquiry. These journeys allow students to explore new languages, traditions, and global perspectives—bringing classroom learning to life in powerful and personal ways.

International travel expands students’ worldview, builds independence, and deepens empathy—helping them see themselves as both learners and global citizens.

A Commitment to Learning That Matters

Whether they’re designing sustainable solutions, navigating international cities, or developing ideas that impact communities, Doane Stuart students are learning to lead with insight, compassion, and courage.

Experiential learning at Doane Stuart empowers students to:

  • Think beyond boundaries
  • Ask bold questions
  • Engage with the world around them
  • Grow into the changemakers of tomorrow
