STEAM Jr. Room Officially Opens in DS Lower school

DSC_0750 (1200x800)On Thursday, October 6 Doane Stuart celebrated the official opening of its STEAM Jr. Room with the help of Congressman Paul Tonko, Assemblyman John McDonald, Ward Alderman James Casey and Gabrielle Polce from the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce and Councilman Jim Van Vorst. Lower School faculty members and members of the Doane Stuart Board of Trustees, Thessaly Bullard ’92 and Ginna Roeding (Emily Lagan ’11 and Robbie Lagan ’14) also gathered for the special occasion.

After helping some of our very own Lower School students design and implement their own lock system in the STEAM room’s impressive new DSC_0859 (1200x800)water table, Congressman Tonko and Assemblyman McDonald spoke to those that gathered about the importance of STEAM related classes and careers reaching our youngest students, specifically the capital region.

The new STEAM program is for our youngest students and will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.  We have added small machines, magnifying glasses, microscopes, an incline board, light table and even a mammoth water table that has working locks – all this and more to encourage understanding of our physical world and to promote systems thinking in our youngest students.  We strongly believe that effective problem-solving starts in Early Childhood.   Many schools offer STEM programs for Upper School and even Middle School
