Spiritual Life
Doane Stuart's program in the study of religion encourages the exploration of ideas and the growth of self awareness; a focus on building understanding, tolerance and appreciation of the beliefs of others; awareness of the needs of others in communities near and far; and the development of each student's personal relationship with God. Students are encouraged to reflect upon the values that we wish to guide our lives, and to attempt to make these values a reality.
As an interfaith school, we support students in the exploration of their own faith and heritage. Although Doane Stuart's heritage is Roman Catholic and Episcopal, students of all faiths feel at home in a community in which traditions of various religions are explored and celebrated. Weekly chapel gatherings build community and the communal life of the school, and expand students' understanding of the world and of the many varieties of celebration and belief. These gatherings provide an opportunity for us to come together as a community to sing, pray, celebrate holidays and special events, listen to stories, and discuss moral and ethical issues as they relate to the everyday lives of students. In the broadest sense, students are encouraged to celebrate the great and ancient search for meaning, which has engaged humans since their beginnings.
As a member of the National Association of Episcopal Schools, Doane Stuart commits itself:
- To build lives of genuine meaning, purpose and service
- To strive for justice and peace among all people and to respect the dignity of every human being
- To demonstrate and proclaim the unique worth and beauty of all human beings as creations of a loving and empowering God.
