Chinese New Year Celebrations
Lower School students ask their guests about  Chinese culture, New Year celebrations and how they are liking studying in the United States.

On Monday, February 8, 2016 Doane Stuart Upper School  students and faculty gathered to celebrate the arrival of the Chinese New Year.  The celebration commenced with a procession of students and faculty to traditional Chinese piano music into the Golub Interfaith Chapel.  Then, many of our students from China shared aspects of their culture and the significance and meaning of this important Chinese celebration and holiday. They explained the symbolic meanings of “fish” throughout Chinese culture and during New Year celebrations, Chinese Zodiac symbols and the characteristics of the “Year of the Monkey,” the tradition or “Red Packets,” and much more.

Later that day Early Childhood, Kindergarten, and First Grade students paraded their homemade dragon costume accompanied by traditional dragon dance music and a special drum.  Then, Students in our 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Grades were also given a presentation by our Chinese students.  The Lower School children took advantage of the opportunity to ask their presenters many interesting questions about their culture.

Giving Doane Stuart students the opportunity to learn about and celebrate this important holiday is just one example of the benefits the School enjoys through its partnership with the Cambridge Institute, the organization that introduces us to our students from China.  Thank you to our extraordinary international students and ESL instructor Mrs. Sonjia Febrey, for their hard work to organize this special event!
