6 Pieces Selected for Regional Juried Art Exhibition

Doane Stuart is proud to announce that five of our Upper School students had their artwork selected for the 17th Annual High School Regional Juried Art Exhibition.  Selected for this year’s exhibition were:  Sami Ahmad ’16 of Latham, Yaer “Vivian” Han ’16 of China (she had two pieces selected), Aaron Kerr ’16 of Belfast, Sophie Lacijan ’18 of Waterford and Hannah Nye ’18 of Rotterdam.  These artists had their work selected from a competitive pool of over 465 pieces submitted from 23 school districts.  Of these 465 pieces, only 109 were selected for inclusion in the exhibition.

From the Albany Center Gallery press release:
In selecting student artwork for the annual Regional Exhibit, mastery of technical skill is a factor, as is students’ ability to go beyond both technical competence and the apparent classroom assignments to present original or unique visual solutions that reveal something of the artist.

The panel consisted of directors, educators and artists; Tony Iadicicco, T.E. Breitenbach and Mary Pat Wager, who reviewed and selected the work for the show.  The judges were impressed by the large number of very strong art works in a range of media produced by area high school students in their art classes. It is quite an honor for the following student(s) to be included in this annual exhibit.

Also of note, one of the images used for this year’s poster is  Man in Monet’s Garden by Merryn Kleider ’15.  Merryn’s piece was selected for last year’s exhibition.

Don’t Wanna Fight
Video

“What I begin with is what will grab the audience with a firm, crushing grip and put them in the place I want them. It needs to be captivating and cathartic, I believe one can do so through video with the use of good editing. I used editing, lights and sounds to tell a story of someone miserable and suffering. I also hoped to raise understanding, not awareness, for the condition and also how complex and individualized each person is when they struggle.

I focused on pain, exhaustion, depression, pressure and liberation. I know that liberation is tricky and can seem too good to be true, which is why there is hesitation towards the end as well. I used this hesitation to show the beginning of a long arduous road to recovery.

I enjoy controlling and manipulating the environment because the world is open for play.  This rings true through video of all art mediums, when lights, sounds, and emotions become your paint and the location your canvas.  I believe you can create great, legendary, inspiring and catastrophically beautiful artwork.”

“People always force personal understanding on plants and animals, and try to beautify the relationship between them.  As a result, the whole world becomes more harmonious.  Cats are proud kings, bears are seen as good gentlemen, tangled trees are thought to be able to check and balance with each other, geese in the water play with each other and even skulls are imagined as though they belonged to people who had stylish past lives.

Self-tricks could fool our eyes, and our hearts also beat dishonestly.  Ice, stars or clouds are all made by human beings’ minds. This wonder can be found in Chinese poetry, which dates back to thousands of years ago.  This is a romance regardless of western or eastern cultures.”

“I believed that the old, abandoned bus was in an unusual area. A mix between the light from the sun beaming through the branches and leaves and shadows present enabled me to create a quality tonal image.”

“I’ve always loved photography and I wanted to incorporate it into my sculpture. I wanted to make something picturesque. It took about 2 and a half weeks to make.  The hardest part was figuring out what to make – that took me 2 class periods to decide – then putting the lense together and getting the right lengths of each tube.”

“I often, in my daily life, see certain sights that I think are beautiful or inspiring; this is usually just by chance. When I take pictures, I try to make others feel the same sense of beauty or empowerment that I feel. I think that the best photographs are the ones that make one feel strong emotion.”
